The Role of Aquamiks in Colorado Chile’s Red Cusk Eel Project

Aquaculture projects often require innovation, expertise, and collaboration to succeed, and nowhere is this more evident than in the work happening in Chile with the rearing of red cusk eel (Genypterus Chilensis). As the only company in the world working on this species, Colorado Chile has leveraged Aquamiks' expertise to optimise its farming systems, juvenile quality, and production processes.

In a recent interview, Piero Magnolfi Orsini, Founder and General Manager of Colorado Chile, spoke about the strategic collaboration with Aquamiks, particularly in optimising their farming systems. “In 2021, in collaboration with Aquamiks, we optimised the farming system, production, and juvenile quality,” stated Magnolfi Orsini. This partnership showcases the critical role Aquamiks plays in improving the efficiency and success of aquaculture operations through its specialised services.

Aquamiks, known for its deep experience in aquaculture, focuses on tailor-made solutions that cater to each client's specific needs. Our team provides a multidisciplinary approach, from engineering and system design to operational optimisation and biosecurity protocols. Magnolfi Orsini highlighted the collaboration with Aquamiks led to significant improvements, including reducing larval survival challenges and optimising broodstock management.

Finding ways to enhance production has been challenging in Colorado Chile’s journey; Aquamiks’ consulting services were vital in addressing these challenges.

Through innovative strategies and hands-on collaboration, Aquamiks helped Colorado Chile shorten the production cycle for red cusk eel, achieving weaning in just 10-15 days.

The hatchery has now achieved an impressive larval survival rate of 30-35%, a significant increase from previous figures.

An important fact to underline is that the whole tutoring program conducted by Aquamiks was entirelly remote, allowing Aquamiks to reduce costs conected to travelling to such remote locations and having the time to respect biological processes.
